In anticipation of their upcoming full-length tribute to the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Flaming Lips have shared one of the album's tracks, "Fixing A Hole," performed by their side-project Electric Würms. You can check out the track below.
A stark departure from the original song's jaunty baroque pop arrangement, the Electric Würms version of "Fixing A Hole" is completely drumless and totally ethereal, featuring Flaming Lips multi-instrumentalist Steve Drozd on vocals backed by arpeggiated acoustic guitar, bass (courtesy of Lips singer Wayne Coyne), and some deep space synthesizers. I want to say that it sounds like the Beatles on acid, but the Beatles on acid just sounds like the Beatles, so I guess it sound like the Beatles on even more acid.
You can check out Electric Würm's version of the Beatles' "Fixing A Hole" right here:
If for some reason you're unfamiliar with the original Beatles version of the song, you can check that out right here as well (though I suggest you just go out and buy the whole album):
The Flaming Lips' Sgt. Pepper's tribute album, titled With A Little Help From My Fwends, isn't the first time that the band has recorded their own version of a classic album. Back in 2009, they released their own version of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, titled The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side of the Moon, which they've performed in concert in its entirety.
With A Little Help From My Fwends is set for release on Oct. 28, and will be the Flaming Lips' first album since 2013's The Terror. Electric Würms just released their debut EP Musik, Die Schwer Zu Twerk yesterday (Aug. 19).
