Miley Cyrus has risen to Eminem and Marilyn Manson-esque status, now having a concert cancelled due to "morals and customs." The government of the Dominican Republic scheduled for September 13 was cancelled due to the pop star's hypersexual onstage behavior. According to the report from ABC News, "(Cyrus) "undertakes acts that go against morals and customs, which are punishable by Dominican law."
Having spent several years living in Inwood/Washington Heights, two New York neighborhoods with one of the largest Dominican populations outside of the country itself, we can attest that the culture, however Catholic it may be, is far from prudish. It's not as if music from the Caribbean nation isn't just as slinky as that coming from the United States. Consider the music video below for "Como Yo Le Doy" from native rapper Don Miguelo.
What's worst about this cancellation is that the government could have made this decision months ago and spared thousands from buying tickets to check out Cyrus's show. Tickets went on sale in July and the decision wasn't made until less than 3 weeks before the show. Seems more like an attention grab—something Cyrus knows all about—from the nation versus moral superiority.
Cyrus has certainly been on a rampage over the last calendar year, from her flesh-colored outfit and foam finger at last Video Music Awards to her (literally) penis-riding live show. The attempts to shock her audience have gotten, if anything, less offensive and more annoying. If the Dominican Republic were to ban her performance due to annoyance, we'd at least give them kudos for being open, but we still can't show support for censorship at private events.
