Metallica's upcoming eleventh studio album "72 Seasons" is just around the corner, and they're already reaching milestones before its release.

The heavy metal band dropped their newest single "If Darkness Had a Son" on Mar. 1, and it ended up peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart.

According to Billboard, this is the first time Metallica has earned the coveted spot on the chart, which is powered by real-time conversations on Twitter.

Aside from releasing the most talked-about song on Twitter, "If Darkness Had a Son" also managed to push Miley Cyrus' "Muddy Feet," featuring Sia out of the way, and into second place.

Following Metallica in the chart is a streak of Cyrus' songs from her upcoming album "Endless Summer Vacation," slated to release on Mar. 10.

"If Darkness Had a Son" is the band's third single off the "72 Seasons" album, alongside "Lux Æterna" and "Screaming Suicide," released last Nov. 28 and Jan. 19, respectively.

Metallica's Clout

Metallica was formed in 1981 with current members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo.

They first found commercial success with the release of their 1986 album "Master of Puppets," then critical success with the release of their 1988 album "...And Justice for All."

To this day, Metallica remains relevant and popular among music lovers and the younger generation.

In fact, Megadeth's David Ellefson admitted that the band had always been at the top of the crop.

"Metallica were always the leader," Ellefson said. "They broke all the doors down to every obstacle in the way of heavy metal."

He also noted the contributions and success of other metal bands like Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, but he was clear in saying that Metallica stood out among the rest.

"But then Metallica came in, and they just fucking [said], 'We're here. We're coming in.' They really broke through every obstacle with MTV and daytime rotation with their videos and just became a household name."

Ellefson was not wrong in citing Metallica as one of the forerunners of the heavy metal genre, after all, not only are they one of the most popular bands, they also happen to be one of the most decorated.

Metallica bagged nine Grammy Awards from 24 nominations as well as several No. 1 hits on the Billboard music charts.
