Last year, SZA released her highly-anticipated sophomore album "SOS" and many fans were amazed by the way she wrote the lyrics of her new music. More recently, the musician's collaborator, Cody Fayne, revealed how the R&B star wrote one of the tracks in just a few minutes.
The producer, who's also known as ThankGod4Cody, recalled how he worked with the "Shirt" songstress and gave fans an insight on the creative process of "SOS," especially the track "I Hate U."
Fayne revealed in an interview that the song was only done in 15 minutes, he noted that he made the beat in front of SZA while she was laying on the couch in the recording studio.
After doing the instrumental of the track, the musician told him that she already "got the song." The producer left the room and came back a few minutes later, and to his surprise, the song is done.
"I left out the room and came back in 15, 20 minutes. The whole song was done. I was like, 'Dang, that's crazy,'" he added. (via Pop Sugar)
The producer compares the R&B star to rappers when it comes to writing music and lyrics as she could create something out of a freestyle.
"Her creative process is literally her and her engineer, in the studio, just hammering and beating and sculpting away at a song," he noted.
Cody Fayne also worked on the singer's debut album "Ctrl" ("Broken Clocks," "Love Galore," "The Weekend," "Wavy (Interlude)") and he shared his true feelings about "SOS" being overdue, saying he didn't expect the next record to "be that long."
After working on the project in 2017, the record producer said he thought they were going to work again "real quick" and then it ended up being in progress for the next five years.
What Took 'SOS' So Long to be Released?
SZA first started teasing fans about the follow-up album to "Ctrl" in 2019 and many were excited. At the time, the R&B star revealed in a previous interview that she was planning to collaborate with artists like Post Malone, Jack Antonoff, Justin Timberlake, and more. (via MTV)
She also noted that the record will be released "soon." In the same year, Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Punch revealed that ideas are already being made for the project.
However, in 2020, SZA alleged that her record label was the reason why the album had been delayed, leading fans to use the hashtag #FreeSZA.
Finally, the musician dropped "SOS" in November of 2022, and it's been the biggest project of her career so far.
