Why did Michael Jackson change his face so much?
In the years before Michael Jackson's death, the late King of Pop became the center of attention because of the changes in his appearance. Fans noticed major differences between what he used to look like when he debuted and his looks upon his death.
The "Smooth Criminal" hitmaker's plastic surgery rumors emerged for decades, but he reportedly had a heartbreaking reason for wanting to change his appearance.
Why Michael Jackson Underwent Plastic Surgery
J. Randy Taraborrelli penned an unauthorized biography about Michael Jackson. According to him, the late singer did not want to be Michael Joseph Jackson. Instead, he wanted to be "something else."
Taraborrelli and other biographers created theories about Jackson's changing appearances and shared the possible reasons why he did it.
Pulitzer Prize-winning critic, Margo Jefferson, said (via ABC News), "I think he longed for some kind of peace of mind. ... He longed for what he could never possibly have back, which was some vision of a childhood."
The "On Michael Jackson" author added that Jackson wanted to leave the "struggling, suffering little Michael Jackson" completely.
Jefferson also noted to the publication that the "Man in the Mirror" singer was too obsessed with staying timeless that he wanted to look like someone who looked immortal.
Michael Jackson Offered Different Statements About Plastic Surgeries
In the years before his death, Michael Jackson appeared in several interviews wherein he was asked about the procedures he had done on his face.
In 2002, he told Martin Bashir that he did not have any plastic surgeries except his nose job. Reports traced the first time Jackson received his first plastic surgery and believed that the accident before his "Off the Wall" album's release caused him to receive the procedure.
At that time, Jackson fell while dancing and broke his nose, leading him to undergo a nose job.
However, Bashir did not accept his answer as he did not think he only had one operation. Jackson then changed his answer and said he had two operations.
Dr. Steven Haughlin was the doctor who performed plastic surgeries on Jackson until the late 1990s. He revealed that he just did what the singer asked him to do. Meanwhile, Dr. Pamela Lipkin claimed Jackson became addicted to plastic surgery that he was left with barely a nose after those operations.
Before his death in June 2009, Jackson still stirred buzzes about his appearance, and fans remain curious although a decade had already passed.
