The Latin Grammy Awards is up for a major recalibration as new categories and criteria are being added for the upcoming 24th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.
Responding to the growing international audience of Latin Music and its subcategories, the Latin Recording Academy is making sure that anyone in the community feels represented, as well as honoring more people in the music industry in the annual music awards show.
Latin Grammys New Categories 2023
Earlier this year, the main Grammys experienced similar fine-tuning as it added a few more categories in their show catalog, including Songwriter of the Year, last February 2023.
In a recent press release, as reported by Variety, there are two Latin Grammys' new categories for 2023.
Latin Grammy Award for Best Singer-Songwriter Song
Eligible acts for the new award category must also be competing in the Latin Grammy Award for Best Singer-Songwriter Album category. Tracks eligible for this category must contain at least 51% of the lyrics in Portuguese, Spanish, or any native regional dialect in Latin America.
Best Portuguese-Language Urban Performance
Responding to the rise of Portuguese-speaking artists like Anitta and Pablo Vittar, the Latin Recording Academy decided to add this specific award category. It recognizes the influx of Urban music created in the regions of Brazil and Portugal. Tracks can include other Urban styles and other genres, but the Urban attribute of the song must dominate among the rest.
Latin Grammys New Criteria 2023
Apart from the two new category additions at the Latin Grammys, the Latin Recording Academy has also added and modified some existing criteria for selected categories.
Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year
51% of the submitted material for the category must be newly recorded. Aside from the main artist, the award will also be given to the producers, engineers, mixers, mastering engineers, and songwriters that appear in 33% of the playing time on the said album.
All Latin Song Categories must include the date of composition when submitting.
Latin Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album
The award shall be given to recording engineers and mixing engineers whose work appears at least 33% of the album and master engineers who appears at least 51% of the playing time of the said album.
Latin Grammys 2023 Date
All of the said revisions and additions will be implemented at the 2024 Latin Grammys or the 24th Annual Latin Grammy Awards in November 2023.
Latin Grammys 2023 Venue
It was reported earlier this year that the Latin Grammys will now be helped in Spain as part of a three-year sponsorship deal with the region of Andalusia. As of this writing, the exact venue has yet to be revealed.
