Lewis Capaldi's meaning of "Before You Go" meaning was discussed in the singer's latest documentary film on Netflix.

Titled "Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now," Capaldi shared several details about his life and career. At one point, he spoke about his hit track, "Before You Go," and its meaning years after he officially released it.

Lewis Capaldi Reveals the Meaning of "Before You Go"

As transcribed by Rolling Stone, the documentary film talks about the song and explains how it was not actually about a breakup. It reveals that he composed "Before You Go" as he watched his mother mourn following the death of her sister, Pat, who died by suicide.

His mother, Carol, tries to contain her tears as she says, "You feel so guilty you didn't manage to stop it. "You can try and help and give them support but unless they want help there's not much more you can do about it."

Pat died when Capaldi was still a kid. During that time, the singer was out of the house when his father Mark found Capaldi's aunt dead. The patriarch says the song's lyrics serve as questions Carol asks her every day since her sister's death.

"Before You Go" was initially released as a single from his debut studio album's extended edition. It became his second US single. He performed it in several ceremonies and shows, including the Swiss Music Awards, the American Music Awards, "Top of the Pops," "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," and the Streamy Awards.

Lewis Capaldi Admits To Getting Nervous About Songwriting

Despite being a renowned singer and songwriter, Capaldi admits to not feeling confident about his abilities as a songwriter since he thinks it has "gotten worse the more success that's come."

"It feels like this is f**king hard and I'm shit at writing songs," he says. "My twitch that I have gets worse when I sit down and play piano. Physically painful. I get really short of breath and shit like that. My back fucking kills me when I do that, which is frightful."

He speaks about his thoughts as he visits a studio in Los Angeles with Amy Allen and Dan Nigro. At that time, he was still undiagnosed with Tourette's syndrome.

Since his debut in 2013, Capaldi already wrote, composed, recorded, and released one studio album, seven EPs, and 11 singles. Among his other hit songs are "Bruises," "Grace," "Mercy," "Tough," "Someone You Loved," and "Hold Me While You Wait."
