Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential icons in the industry of music, but little did fans know that there was a moment in his career when he was heckled by fans of the Monkees, but it made him more famous than ever; how did it happen?
Micky Dolenz dropped by "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" to promote his book "I'm Told I Had a Good Time" where he recalled the incident, confirming that the legendary musician was not favored by their band's fans.
According to Grunge, The Monkees and Hendrix were competing on the charts as both of them released their albums on the same year ("The Monkees" self-titled and "Are You Experienced?")
Since both of them were highly successful, Dolenz claimed he was the one who presented the idea to ask the guitarist to join them on tour as a supporting act after seeing him perform at the Cafe Au Go Go in New York.
Jimi Hendrix Once Hated The Monkees
On the show, the musician explained that when he saw Hendrix perform live, they were looking for an opening act and he immediately suggested the guitarist fill in the spot.
"I suggested them [Hendrix's band] opening for the headlining act," he said.
They were immediately on board with the idea as other members of the group, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, were fans of the musician.
However, it appears that Hendrix didn't like the group as he told a British music publication Melody Maker that he hated them, saying, "Oh God, I hate them! Dishwater ... You can't knock anybody for making it, but people like the Monkees?"
Jimi Hendrix Finally Joins The Monkees on Tour But Was Heckled
Despite his controversial remarks about the band, Dolenz and his bandmates urged Hendrix and their management for the former to join them on tour.
The plan was to warm up the crowd by Hendrix and his band before The Monkees go up on stage for their tour across the United Stage.
However, things started getting out of hand when the guitarist finally performed as Dolenz recalled because their fans were not used to Hendrix's style of music.
While he was performing, the crowd chanted, "We Want Davy [Jones, the Monkees singer]! We Want the Monkees!"
