Lady Gaga and Kanye West may be different when it comes to genres and the way they present music, but there was a moment in pop culture history when the two almost collaborated on a tour together. However, despite meticulous planning, the series of shows got canceled; find out below what happened.
Titled "Fame Kills: Starring Kanye West and Lady Gaga," the tour was supposed to feature songs from the rapper's "808s & Heartbreak" album and the Academy Award-winning singer's "The Fame Monster" EP.
It all began in June 2009 when the "Donda" musician announced in an interview on The View that he would be touring with the singer, but he clarified that she will not be an opening act, but instead, a co-headlining artist.
"She's talented and so incredible that she's not an opening act, we're doing it together," he said.
Lady Gaga later expressed her excitement over the series of concerts in August of that year, saying it would be one of the "most groundbreaking moments in touring history."
Lady Gaga, Kanye West 'Fame Kills' Tour Concept
When the two artists were conceptualizing their tour, Gaga has a request for West before she agrees to go on tour with him. The musician wanted the shows to be accessible for her gay fans as she's a part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
"I love my gay fans and they're all going to be coming to our show. And it's going to remain gay," she told Out Magazine.
Aside from being successful musicians, they are also highly-creative individuals as both of them would often take charge and direct music videos, design clothes, and more, that's why for their collaborative tour, they designed the stage together.
The stage design concept was a traverse. They wanted to have a massive runway in the middle and two separate stages instead of "being on just one ond of the arena."
On Lady Gaga's side, it represents "home and humble beginnings," while the rapper's end would be "the fame." Both of them were set to perform their individual songs as well as several duets.
Why Did 'Fame Kills' Tour Get Canceled?
Unfortunately, the tour, which was scheduled to run from November 2009 to January 2010, was canceled despite having a solid concept.
The reported reason why the series of concerts didn't push through was the MTV Video Music Awards drama wherein Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech where she won the award for Best Female Video.
Audience and home viewers were shocked when West suddenly went up on stage and grabbed the "You Belong With Me" singer's microphone and told the crowd that Beyoncé "had one of the best videos of all time."
There were also rumors that circulated regarding poor ticket sales, leading to its cancelation. (via Rolling Stone Magazine)
