Ellie Goulding is switching gears and heading toward a new and different direction with her sound.

It has been three years since the release of her fourth studio album, "Brightest Blue," which received a lukewarm reception.

The album was given a 6.4 review from Pitchfork. The publication noted one particular eyesore that the album had: "Its suffocating production undermines the more grounded lyrics."

They went on to explain how the sound of the album was "obscenely expensive", but it was competing with the singer's vocals.

Will She Redeem Herself?

Now that the English singer is coming back, many are wondering what they can expect from "Higher Than Heaven."

Goulding dished out exactly that: "In the best possible way, this album wasn't taken from personal experiences,"

"It was such a relief and really refreshing to not be sitting in the studio going through all the things that happened to me and affected me, she shared. "Because I feel things very deeply. I always have."

Despite the singer's admission that her music has always been a reflection of her experience and emotions, she then did a 180-turn and warned her fans.

"It's the least personal album," she added but continued: "But I think it's the best album because I got to just explore other things about myself. I just really, really enjoy writing, really enjoy being a singer."

Miracle

Following the trend of music reflecting the artist's vulnerability and inner feelings, wrapped in upbeat and synths like Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" or Shakira's revenge song about Gerard Pique in collaboration with Bizarrap, Goulding is taking part of the movement.

"[This record] is an escape ... it's designed to dance, to feel free and to feel like anything is possible," she explained.

This much can be heard in her collab song with Calvin Harris, "Miracle." Just like their other collab songs, this one follows a distinct sound with melancholy lyrics.

"Are you too cynical / To believe in a miracle / That just slipped through my hands / But could you take a chance for me?" Goulding sang.

If you want a taste of the "Lights" singer's upcoming album, listen to her recently released single, "By the End of the Night."
