Childish Gambino just hit the web with his first new music since last winter's Because The Internet.
"Candler Road" is a shapeshifting single that moves from a tongue-in-cheek, Drake-like opening verse into a heavy rhythm-and-synth combo that flashes Gambino's typical "edgy dork" sound.
Named after a road in his hometown of Decatur, Ga., the single features a lot of sports imagery:
I'm doin' somethin', stay with it
I sport the Oakland A fitted
Cause it's Moneyball and I'm throwin' funny
But all the kids'll go get it
Once the new beat kicks in, he gets deep:
They want the old Bino so they try to rewind
The new Bino too ahead of his time
In a couple of years, they'll have to say I birthed a couple careers
Chances are get your boy a coupld of ears, you know it
Perhaps the most memorable line will end up being a reference to Kanye West's "School Spirit" that throws shade at a cavalcade of "light-skinned" rappers led by Drake.
But I don't know how
All these light-skinned n----s came back in style
Ye lied to us
For reference: Kanye's line in "School Spirit":
I'mma make sure these light-skinned n----s
Never, ever, never come back in style
Of course, that was 2004, and a lot has changed in the past decade. For instance, Drake is now doing this instead of this.
Gambino was in the news last week for a Twitter poem he wrote in the wake of the Ferguson riots. In the brief flash of poetic anger, he assessed the country's valuation of black men and how he fits into the picture.
No word yet on a new album, but "Candler Road" is fire, fire, fire.
