John Mayer opened up about his song, "Paper Doll," after news about Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn's breakup surfaced.
Mayer and Swift sparked dating rumors in 2009 after the two singers collaborated on his "Half of My Heart" track. However, the "Lavender Haze" seemingly confirmed their breakup when she released the 2010 breakup song, "Dear John."
Recently, Swifties spoke about the track's connection to Mayer's "Paper Doll," which they believe a response to Swift's song.
John Mayer Opens Up About Feeling "Hurt" When He Wrote "Paper Doll"
Mayer recently performed in front of his fans during his April 8 concert at Golden 1 Center, Sacramento, California.
Videos from the event have since gone viral as the singer spoke about his 10-year-old song.
"I wonder if people don't like [the song] because it sounds a little pissed off. I don't like 'pissed off' as a song. I think it was more 'hurt,'" he said of the song. "Is there something about it that's a little bitchy? I try not to give bitchiness in the song, and that happens sometimes. I guess I don't do it very well, 'sarcastic b**ch.'"

Mayer released "Paper Doll" as the lead single of his sixth studio album, "Paradise Valley." Fans noted for years that the track has similar lyrics to "Dear John."
Its lyrics include "'Cause you're like 22 girls in one / And none of them know what they're runnin' from," in the chorus; meanwhile, Swift sings "And I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said 'run as fast as you can,'" in her song.
Is John Mayer's "Paper Doll" a Response to Taylor Swift's "Dear John"?
Neither of the artists ever confirmed the connection between the two, but Mayer previously refused to share the meaning of the song "to save the integrity of being a singer-songwriter."
In one of his Instagram Live sessions, the singer said a singer-songwriter does not talk about who the songs are inspired by. As for his "Paper Doll," Mayer acknowledged that he knew the buzz surrounding it and how the public believed it was about somebody.
Meanwhile, he told Rolling Stone in 2012 that he was humiliated by Swift's song for him, calling it a "pretty lousy thing" for her to do.
