The Weeknd is a lot of things. He's a record producer, a singer, an actor, and a television series producer as well.
With the launch of his highly controversial HBO Max series, "The Idol," he's adding a little spice: an official soundtrack.
The "Die for You" singer teased fans via social media. He shared a 17-second clip of himself standing in a recording studio, overlooking the controls as he listened to a dramatic instrumental.
"'The Idol' Vol. 1," he wrote with a CD emoji. "Coming soon (double fantasy & jealous guy just a taste)."
'The Idol'
It's no surprise that the Canadian singer is curating a soundtrack for "The Idol," after all, the show is basically about a pop singer's life.
According to reports, the show will have six episodes and will follow the life of a pop idol, portrayed by Lily-Rose Depp, as she falls in love with a cult leader who is moonlighting as a club owner.
On top of being a producer for the show, The Weeknd will also play the cult leader.
"The Idol" will boast a star-studded cast which will include BLACKPINK's Jennie, Troye Sivan, Suzanna Son, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Anne Heche, and Nico Hiraga.
Dark and Dramatic
There isn't much known about "The Idol" yet, since it's still in the works, but the entire show has been wrapped in controversy after a Rolling Stone report was published.
Official statements say that the show is "set against the backdrop of the music industry, centers on a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult, who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol."
However, the report describes it to be more like someone's "rape fantasy" due to the violent scenes included in the show.
The source said: "Any rape fantasy that any toxic man would have in the show - and then the woman comes back for more because it makes her music better."
The singer slash producer took to social media to address the Rolling Stone report. He shared a short clip from the show and wrote, "[Rolling Stone], did we upset you?"
The clip shows Depp, The Weeknd, and Levy's characters discussing the pop idol's opportunity to be featured on a Rolling Stone cover.
"Rolling Stone? Aren't they a little irrelevant?" said The Weeknd's character, Tedros.
