Many are desperately hoping for a One Direction reunion, and perhaps hoped that James Corden could be the one who can make it happen.
Turns out, they were wrong.
According to reports, The Mirror was the one who instigated the rumors that the four-membered boy group was slated to perform at the finale of "The Late Late Show."
However, probably because of all the hounding the fans have been doing to Corden's show and his team, they had to issue an official statement debunking the rumors.
"Nobody loves the boys more than us... but this story just isn't true," read a tweet from "The Late Late Show." "What is true is we've got an absolutely brilliant 2 hour finale planned to celebrate 8 years of #LateLateShow at 10pm on April 27th."
They also shared a picture of the report with the words "false alarm" written on it.
'Where Do Broken Hearts Go?'
One Direction and Corden's "The Late Late Show" go way back. One of the group's last talk show appearances was done with Corden, and they even rode with the talkshow host for his Carpool Karaoke segment.
On top of that, according to Rolling Stone, Ben Winston, an executive producer at the talkshow, had frequently worked with One Direction on several music videos, including "Night Changes," "You and I," "Best Song Ever," "Story of My Life," and "Midnight Memories."
He, too, issued a statement expressing his disappointment that the complete group won't be able to make it to the show's finale: "I wish! Sadly not going to happen!"
This is not the first time One Direction has been subjected to reunion rumors.
A month ago, Harry Styles accidentally shared a picture of himself sporting a One Direction shirt, which sparked reunion rumors.
It was ultimately taken down, but it seems like it awoke the fans, who have been not-so patiently waiting for the group to come back from their supposed 18-month hiatus.
As of this writing, there is no word on whether One Direction ever plans to reunite as a boy group again, but fans are still holding on and hoping it will happen one day.
The Finale
After a lengthy and successful run with his talkshow, Corden announced that he is leaving "The Late Late Show" back in November 2022.
"I'm thrilled to be extending [for a year]," the talkshow host said. "I always thought I'd do it for five years and then leave and then I stayed on. I've really been thinking about it for a long time, thinking whether there might be one more adventure."
""My intention is to try and go out in exactly the same way we came in, which is just going out with a bang."
