Ja Rule knows to give credit where it is due. However, some hip-hop fans thought that his latest comments and statements about the female rap game might have gone overboard as he received flak over it.
The rapper was slammed online after crediting Nicki Minaj for reopening the female rap game when the singer arrived in 2010. Minaj famously fused hip-hop and rap with pop, making her one of the pioneers of the said subgenre.
Ja Rule Credits Nicki Minaj For Female Rap Game
It has been a constant conversation about who the real Queen of Rap is. For others it is Lil Kim, to some it's Missy Elliot, but for many people online, it's Nicki Minaj.
The female rapper swept the world with the release of "Super Bass" and "Pink Friday" in 2010, which notably gained prominence and catapulted Minaj's fame. Since then, many female rap artists, who are more feminine compared to the grunge and street style that Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, Eve, and the likes had in the 90s, have emerged, crediting Nicki Minaj as their inspiration.
Ja Rule, in an interview with The Shade Room, gave his thoughts on the female rap game. For him, Nicki got "proper praise" saying that her place in the rap game is solidified since then.
"There were no female MCs out and about until Nicki came back out. Before her, the last one was like Lauryn Hill," he admitted.
He credited Nicki for the female rap domination that is happening in the music scene right now, saying that she has "reopened" the door for them right now, as they were "having a run as they've never had before.
Ja continued to note that back then, there was only Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, and even older artists. Now, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Saweetie, Doja Cat, and the like have taken inspiration from Nicki Minaj's sensual and feminine touch on rap music - a stark contrast to the abovementioned 90s rappers known for their grunge and street style music.
Ja Rule Gets Egged On Nicki Minaj Comment
However, many hip-hop fans thought that Ja Rule's comments were discrediting the other female rappers who paved the way.
Many pointed out that Ja Rule left out Eve, Trina, Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, and Foxy Brown in his comments, which angered many longtime fans.
"Eve deserves her roses if anything because in her prime Eve done so much from music to her own Tv show etc," a user said on Instagram.
"Soooooo what about Eve and foxy brown ?? What about Trina and Missy Elliot and LIL KIM !?" another echoed.
