After Kelsea Ballerini's bold performance at the 2023 CMT Awards, which featured drag queens, Lizzo now follows suit as she invited more to her Tennessee concert last week.
Tennessee has been the hotspot for anti-LGBTQ and transgender oppression policies and laws in the past few months, which marks it rather unsafe for them because of security and safety problems.
Lizzo Drag Queen Performance in Tennessee
Performing at the second leg of her US tour of "Special," Lizzo recruited "RuPaul Drag Race" alums to accompany her onstage for a protest performance.
Inviting Asia O'Hara, Aquaria, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Kandy Muse, and a plethora of other drag queens for the performance, Lizzo revealed why she did such a thing in an impassioned speech for the crowd.
"In light of recent and tragic events and current events, I was told by people on the internet, 'Cancel your shows in Tennessee,' 'Don't go to Tennessee,'" Lizzo revealed, which prompted the crowd to unleash a huge boo. However, Lizzo had more to say: "You don't have to boo that person. Their reasons were valid."
But for Lizzo, she needs to be with the people who need to hear the message most.
"Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences? And celebrate fat black women?"
Lizzo has also received flak for allegedly promoting obesity among young people, which draws flak from many people.
The singer then thanked everyone in the crowd for standing up for their rights while protecting each other and "holding the people accountable who should be protecting us."
Earlier this month, Tennessee became the first state in the United States to criminalize drag show performance, making it illegal for drag queens to perform in public places, 1,000 feet of a public park, a school, and even a church. The legislation has been echoed by 15 other states in the country. (via NME)
