Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan shared why Black Sabbath became his favorite band instead of The Beatles and other rock bands.
Before forming Smashing Pumpkins, Corgan revealed that he had been listening to other bands which inspired him over the years. However, only Black Sabbath reportedly made a difference in his life.
Why Black Sabbath Became Smashing Pumpkins Vocalist Billy Corgan's Favorite
Corgan spoke highly of Black Sabbath through a post on his Instagram page. He told his fans and followers that no one has inspired him more aside from the "Children of the Grave" hitmakers.
He elaborated his statement more in his interview with Chuck Armstrong on Loudwire Nights on Friday. The "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" rocker shared why Black Sabbath plays a huge important in his life despite watching other rock bands as he grew up.
According to Corgan, Black Sabbath serves as the very first band with whom he truly felt connected. Although he also loved The Beatles, he explained that his favorite band was "making music for him."
"I couldn't even really articulate it even today," he said. "There's something about Sabbath that makes me think about the stars and the moon and how it's a big, crazy universe out there and we're just kind of navigating here on this little planet."
Aside from speaking about his love for "Into the Void" singers, Corgan also described Black Sabbath as "a band with humanity," which he realized after meeting and talking to them over the years.
Billy Corgan Became a Bigger Fan of Black Sabbath Over the Years
Corgan made one of his dreams as a fan come true when he scored the chance to work with Tony Iommi on the latter's debut solo album in 2000. The time he spent with Black Sabbath made him realize that the band members were not untouchable at all, leading him to feel inspired by them even more.
Having decades of experience as musicians developed a commonality between the bands, which Corgan has since referred to as a "connection." He applauded the musicians' capacity to make aspirational music despite having critics.
Black Sabbath was formed in 1968 in Birmingham. Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Geezer Butler, and Ozzy Osbourne continuously released music over the decades that they are often called the pioneers of heavy metal music.
Two decades later, Corgan formed Smashing Pumpkins in Chicago, Illinois, alongside James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and D'arcy Wretzky. The frontman is the only constant member since the band's formation.
