After a crazy three-hour finale (it's long -- considering all the anticipation!), Iam Tongi has been crowned the newest "American Idol."
Tongi, age 18, was crowned the winner on Sunday's season finale of the singing competition series following a stunning performance of his original composition "I'll Be Seeing You." He competed against Megan Danielle and Colin Stough, who, respectively, placed second and third.
On this fateful night, Tongi had a complete circle moment when he returned to the American Idol stage during the season 21 finale to perform "Monsters" alongside the legendary singer who first moved audiences to tears in 2019 with the song.
Fans became quite emotional.
Katy Perry was also profoundly moved during the American Idol season 21 finale, shedding tears in response to Iam Tongi's outstanding performance.
After host Ryan Seacrest proclaimed Tongi the victor, he sang "Don't Let Go" as his family, the judges, and the audience applauded and celebrated.
During his audition, Tongi moved the judges to tears by dedicating the song "Monsters" to his father, who had passed away several months prior.
At the time, her emotionally said she was not concerned about whether he would survive the song; rather, he was concerned about whether they would survive the song.
"Your father is very proud," Lionel Richie said at the time, as Katy Perry remarked that it was a terrific song selection. She even said she cannot manage your heartbreak over his father because her nephew lost his father and moved in with her, and it pains her to see him miss hi father.
Luke Bryan said he has an incredible voice.
Perry, 38, told PEOPLE in a group interview earlier this month that the competition was intense, but Tongi had something special. She said the finalist possesses this extraordinary charisma and its unexplainable.
Incredibly, few would say the choice is wrong. Many were quite emotional in the social media that Tongi won.
