Sam Smith has canceled upcoming concerts in Birmingham and Glasgow on the advice of doctors, after being forced to cease performing in Manchester after four songs due to "a vocal cord injury" on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the 31-year-old "heartbroken" star stated on Instagram that doctors advised a "complete vocal rest". "If they continue to sing, they will cause irreparable harm to their voice," they explained. After resting, they will be able to perform once more.

The artist stated that refunds are accessible. They recently canceled a performance in Glasgow due to health concerns and rescheduled it for May 25th, while the Birmingham date was moved to the following Saturday.

At the point of purchase, all three cancelled concerts' ticket holders will be able to receive a refund. The singer, who uses they/them pronouns, had to cut short their performance at the AO Arena in Manchester on Wednesday, just hours after promoting a show "surprise" on social media.

The concert had begun promisingly with a performance of the hit "Unholy."

Fans were left confused when the venue went dark, the concert ended, and the performer departed the stage. The audience was then informed that Smith was experiencing "vocal issues."

An contrite Smith had previously explained on Instagram that they had contracted a virus several weeks prior to the European segment of their tour, but had not felt ill again until the beginning of Wednesday's performance.

Interestingly, just before this unfortunate announcement, Sam Smith has teased a very big upcoming project.
Sam Smith surprised fans on Tuesday (May 24) by releasing a short preview of their impending collaboration with Madonna.

The electrifying clip posted to the pop star's social media accounts begins with a black screen, followed by Smith's voice announcing "Sam and..." followed by Madonna's tantalizing murmur of her name. The pair repeats the statement twice more before the teaser abruptly ends.

Even without a release date or title, fans were quick to excitedly react to the news.

In late January, Smith released their most recent album, Gloria. The studio album was preceded by the singles "Love Me More," "Unholy" featuring Kim Petras, and "Gimme," and on the day of the album's release, the pop star released the defiant music video for the fourth single, "I'm Not Here to Make Friends."

In the meantime, Madonna is preparing for her forthcoming The Celebration Tour, following the release of Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones last year. The hits-only tour celebrating the icon's 40th year in the music industry will kick off in Vancouver on July 15.
