As an actual idol, Jennie Kim did not have to step too much out of her comfort zone while she filmed the highly controversial and anticipated HBO series "The Idol."
However, the KPOP star did admit that transitioning from singer slash rapper slash dancer to actress was a different feat altogether.
"It definitely was a challenge, because I've never experienced anything like that before. It was like, breaking a wall for me," Jennie explained in an interview.
In addition, the "Solo" singer had help from her co-star Lily-Rose Depp, who stars as Jocelyn, the female lead in the upcoming series.
"She really helped me a lot. Telling me about scenes, and it was very comforting to have her there," Jennie continued. "She just taught me to express myself and be comfortable with myself, to not be scared."
'The Idol'
The KPOP star did not really talk much about the backlash and criticisms about the series, but instead, she talked about how she was drawn to the project in the first place.
"The fact that it was about the music industry fascinated me, and I thought I could bring something to the role," the South Korean singer said. "It was an opportunity to just be myself and be brave. I didn't really train for it, or prep anything. Sam wanted me to just be myself."
Jennie also noted that Sam Levinson, the creator of the show, also helped her in every aspect of her role.
"I trusted [the show's director] Sam [Levinson] to be collaborative with all the scenes that we would be working on together because it was about the industry."
BLINKs
Due to the mixed reactions garnered by "The Idol," some fans were not really sure what to make of Jennie's participation in the project.
BLACKPINK's fans, or BLINKs, expressed both their concerts and support towards the KPOP star.
"For a KPOP idol, it really was hard to break out from that typical stereotype image an idol must have. Great job for challenging yourself rather than being scared of new things. So proud of you!"
"I'm so proud of you love, people will judge you no matter what you do. just always be yourself and do what makes you happy. I love you," another added.
Others had this to say: "['The Idol'] is getting the backlash it deserves for being just misogynistic porn and blinks are like "At least Jennie ate and got more recognition". She's a Sam Levinson fan who agreed to star in this problematic series and promote it to her young fans. SHE'S ALSO A PROBLEM."
