Dr. Dre Makes History by Being the First Hip-Hop Artist to Be Awarded by ASCAP

Dr. Dre has been putting his best efforts into his music for decades now and is known as one of the most legendary artists in the hip-hop industry so it's only fitting for him to receive a special award.

According to CBS News, the rapper will be honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, also known ASCAP, as the first artist to receive the inaugural Hip-Hop Icon Award.

In a statement released by the licensing group, awardees of the said category has "musical contributions" that made "an indelible impact on the art and culture of hip-hop."

The musician will receive the award this week at the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards Celebration of 50 Years of Hip-Hop.

The reason why the organization chose the rapper is that Dr. Dre's work in the industry became a foundation of what hip-hop is in the present.

"As a champion for some of today's biggest artists and a successful entrepreneur, he changed the culture around hip-hop," Paul Williams, the Chairman of the Board and President of ASCAP said.

Dr. Dre Success in the Hip-Hop Industry

The musician, also known as the founder of the popular company Beat by Dr. Dre, amassed massive success throughout his decades-long career.

As of today, Dr. Dre has 26 Grammy Award nominations and he won seven of them. He is also the CEO of his own record label called Aftermath Entertainment.

In addition, the rapper was also the mind behind Death Row Records, which is a popular company beloved by some of the biggest musicians like Snoop Dogg and many more.

Dr. Dre was the reason behind the success of hip-hop icons like 50 Cent, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and more.

How Did Dr. Dre Become Famous?

According to Showbiz CheatSheet, the musician's career took off when he joined the group World Class Wreckin' Cru in the mid-80s.

The following year, he met another famous musician Ice Cube and had a successful working relationship together.

After his time with the group, he took over the music scene by being a solo artist in the 90s. From there, the rapper built his career from the ground up and founded a recording company, making him more successful than he ever is.

As of today, Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Romelle Young, has an estimated net worth of $500 million, making him the third richest rapper in the world. (via Wealthy Gorilla)
