"The Idol" starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp has been getting mixed reviews and controversial comments throughout its run, but the season is finally over as the last episode would air tonight; why did they only have five episodes?
Many would assume that the show is ending early because of its controversy and backlash from social media users as they deem the show disturbing due to Depp's nudity and the musician's "bad acting."
However, there is actually a good reason behind it.
According to Yahoo!, the series was reported to have six episodes, but fans are now confused that the show will end with five.
'The Idol' Season Finale
In a report published by TVLine, the last episode titled "Jocelyn Forever" will air tonight.
According to a source who spoke with the outlet, the series only has five episodes after "Sam Levinson took over and made significant changes. The story only ended up requiring 5."
In addition, it was also reported that the show was never meant to have more episodes and it was "always a limited series."

Since the show will end with only five episodes, some fans are hoping for a second season to explore more of Jocelyn's character as well as Tedros.
However, HBO issued a statement, saying, "It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night."
As of this writing, there are still no announcements on whether a new season will premiere in the future.
The Weeknd Says Negative Reactions on 'The Idol' was Expected
The recent news comes after The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, spoke with Variety, saying the public backlash was not a surprise and he expected most of it.
He added that he and Sam Levinson were doing exactly what they wanted to do and none of that was a surprise.
The musician explained that the show is "almost educational" because it tackles the dark side of the music industry, which shows the price of being an incredibly famous public figure, adding that famous personalities are being surrounded by people whose intentions are unclear.
The season finale of "The Idol" will air tonight at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
