Victor Wembanyama's first foray into the NBA on Friday was met with a sour reception, largely due to his bodyguard's incident involving Britney Spears and her fans.
In response to a 19-year-old French basketball player's lackluster performance in San Antonio Spurs's game against Charlotte Hornets, members of the Britney Army took to social media with witty jokes, according to the New York post.
This young athlete earned nine points, while only managing eight rebounds and five blocks during his match.
As a throwback to the early 2000s, a fan recently shared an old clip of the "Baby One More Time" singer playing basketball during her appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show".
When a Twitter user posted a clip of Britney playing in heels with the caption, "Britney scoring in heels take notes Victor Wembanyama."
Another social media user responded by posting a throwback photo of the pop princess in her high school basketball uniform and asked fans to retweet their opinion on whether she could beat Wembanyama one-on-one.
The tweet concluded with a second image of Britney participating in a celebrity basketball game.
Victor Wembanyama's reaction to being smacked was a tweet that quickly went viral with more than a thousand retweets and likes on the platform.
An avid fan commented on Twitter saying, "That Britney voodoo is real!" in response to Victor's situation.
The internet was in full force after Wembanyama's first Summer League game, with Barstool Sports writing an especially scathing tweet: "Did Britney curse Wembanyama or does he just stink?"
In the wake of an altercation with a security guard, Victor spoke at a post-game press conference. He commented that although he's still figuring out his role on the court, he's determined to hone his skills for future matchups.
The incident in Las Vegas occurred just two days before his first game.
Outside of celebrity hotspot, a shocking incident took place involving Britney Spears and Victor Wembanyama and a rising basketball star. Attempting to take a photo with him, she was suddenly struck in her face by his bodyguard, shattering her sunglasses.
In a statement posted Thursday to both Twitter and Instagram, the "Toxic" singer expressed that though this was not her first traumatic experience, it certainly caught her off guard.
"I was not prepared for what happened to me last night."
In her own words, Britney described the incident as "super embarrassing". She went on to emphasize that no one from her team has ever caused harm to a fan throughout her entire career as a performer.
In contrast to what Victor Wembanyama had told a group of ESPN reporters, that someone had "grabbed" him from behind during the incident, a video emerged on Friday which suggested otherwise.
The footage showed only that Britney had given the pro baller a gentle tap on his back - an action she had disclosed previously.
