When she portrays the legendary Harley Quinn in "Joker: Folie a Deux" next year, singer Lady Gaga will be stepping into the superhero world.
But do not think Lady Gaga is going to be green in this set, even though it's not her first foray into the acting world. She is set to take on the realm of superheroes, using an innovative tactic on the set to make her performance laudable. But is she being a diva about it?
Not really. She just knows how she could make things work in her favor.
Cinematographer Larry Sher, on The Trenches TV podcast revealed that Gaga requested to be called "Lee" on the set. It makes her stay on character. Here, she co-stars with Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix in the much awaited "Joker: Folie a Deux," which hits theaters on October 4, 2024.
The 37-year-old singer, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, made her feature film debut in 2018's "A Star Is Born."
She then appeared in 2021's House of Gucci after recently having a lawsuit over her dog-napping incident dismissed.
Phoenix won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the 2019 film Joker, which was shot by Sher, who also attested that Phoenix was "100% in character all the time."
"I didn't know Stefani at all," Sher said referring to Gaga's real name, Stefani Germanotta. "Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space. And then I remember for a week, being like, 'God, I feel like we are disconnecting. Not even connecting. We are like on opposites.' And I would say to my crew, 'Jesus, I can't crack it. She either hates me or we hate each other. There's something weird going on here.'"
The plot of "Joker 2" is yet unknown, but it has been described as a musical drama taking place in and around Arkham Asylum. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey make up the supporting cast. Resuming his position as director is Todd Phillips. The first "Joker" came out in 2019 and earned over $1 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. Phoenix won the best actor award, and the movie received 11 Oscar nominations, including one for best picture. Production on the "Joker" prequel was completed early this year. Margot Robbie, the first performer to portray Harley Quinn in live-action on the big screen, stated her support for Gaga playing the comic book heroine.
