Mae Stephens, a chart-topping sensation from Kettering, will release a new single next month after collaborating with a Grammy recipient.
If We Ever Broke Up peaked at number 13 on the charts for the 20-year-old formerly employed at Asda, who rose to prominence earlier this year after a TikTok video went viral. Now she hopes to reach even greater heights with her August 4 release, Mr. Right, featuring Meghan Trainor.
Trainor previously led the charts with the song All About That Bass and was named the best new artist at the 2016 Grammy Awards. Mae stated in a TikTok post, "I have never been more excited to announce that I and the incredible Meghan Trainor will be releasing this banger." Mae and her family moved to the area when she was six years old, and they have lived in Kettering Leisure Village, Burton Latimer, and Barton Seagrave.
She attended Burton Latimer's Meadowside Primary School and then Latimer Arts College, where, as a coping mechanism for being bullied, she spent hours daily composing songs and playing the piano. When she left school, she began performing at open mic evenings at venues such as The Stirrup Cup before becoming a global star after posting a clip of If We Ever Broke Up on social media, accompanied by her dancing.
Since then, she has signed with the record label EMI, spent time in Los Angeles, and performed before enormous audiences at the Thetford Festival and Glastonbury.
Mae previously told the Northants Telegraph that she will never forget where her music career began, and that she would love to perform a major concert in Kettering.
The 19-year-old singer-songwriter hails from North Northamptonshire's Kettering. Since the age of 12, Stephens has been composing songs and is a regular on BBC Music Introducing in Northamptonshire. The supermarket employee has over 250,000 followers on TikTok and 5.5 million likes; prior to going viral, she frequently posted videos of herself singing original tunes.
The song published by Stephens on February 10 is the ultimate breakup anthem. It tells the tale of Stephens informing the father of her ex-boyfriend how his son treated her throughout their relationship, with lyrics such as "If we ever broke up, I'd never be sad, thinking of everything we had."
