Halsey is reportedly approaching her forthcoming album without "strict genre parameters." What does this mean exactly?

The "Nightmare" singer has provided fans with an update on her follow-up to 2021's "if I Can't Have Love, I Want Power" and revealed she's composed "some of my best songwriting" in a manner similar to that of her 2020 album "Manic."

When asked by a fan on Twitter how she is progressing with the album, she responded that at the moment, she is approaching it similarly to how I approached "Manic." She added that there are no strict genre parameters or anything else. Simply creating what feels nice and resonates is how she's going about it.

She added that she has done "some of my best songwriting" and that "a lot of life has happened to me since I wrote ['If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power'] (sic)"

After leaving Capitol, the 'Without Me' hitmaker signed a new record contract with Columbia Records last month. In April, the '11 Minutes' singer's managers, Anti-Pop's Jason Aron and Anthony Li, confirmed Halsey - who uses the pronouns she/they - had severed ways with Capitol Records after eight years.

Halsey also hinted at the release of new music.

Halsey stated in a statement to Variety at the time that after eight great years, the decision to leave Capitol is bittersweet, but they are excited about exploring a new partnership and sharing new music with fans.

The record label added that everyone at Capitol poured their hearts into assisting Halsey realize their dreams and share their music with the world.

They said that they are extremely proud of everything they have accomplished together and wish Halsey the best of luck in their future endeavors.

And the outlet later verified that the singer has rejoined the major label that released her hit singles "Closer" and "Without Me."

While no cause was given for the split from Capitol's Astralwerks imprint, the 28-year-old pop star previously had a dispute with Capitol over her song "So Good," with the label allegedly wanting the song to go viral on TikTok prior to its release.

In an ironically viral TikTok, the "Bad At Love" singer asserted that the record label would not release the song "unless they can fake a viral moment on TikTok."

Last month, Variety has verified that Columbia Records has signed Halsey. This decision comes just two months after the singer left her longtime record label, Capitol Music Group.

The move reunites Halsey, who uses she/they pronouns, with the label behind one of their two greatest hits: "Closer," the Chainsmokers song featuring her on co-lead vocals, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for approximately 12 weeks in 2016.

In 2018, Halsey also topped the charts with "Without Me." In 2013, Halsey signed with Capitol's Astralwerks imprint and soon became one of the label's most popular artists. Yet their fierce independence - she often tells the story of a label executive telling her she wasn't ready to make an album, prompting her to ask her fans via Twitter if they wanted one - frequently placed them at odds with it.
