The 1975 is up for a huge legal headache as the festival organizer for the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
This was because Matty Healy, the band's unpredictable vocalist, kissed his male bandmate, bassist Ross MacDonald, in protest of the country's anti-LGBTQ legislation.
The 1975 Sued by Good Vibes Festival
According to a Variety report, the organizer of the Malaysian Good Vibes Festival is suing the Grammy-nominated band for $2 million in damages for their onstage stint at the festival.
This was because Healy's fiery rant against the LGBTQ legislation of the country resulted in authorities canceling the event.
Per the publication, the aftermath of Healy's rants and actions resulted in numerous bands and small businesses losing the chance to continue their business for the festival.
Local artists and global acts, which include The Strokes, were bumped out.
Future Sound Asia, the company behind the festival, pointed out that they are seeking this lawsuit because of an alleged "breach of contract" for the embattled band. The 1975 is being requested compensation for agency losses after the event was canceled because of Healy's actions and statements.
The company has issued a statement saying the band has only a very limited number of time to provide the compensation needed and implied that the lawsuit would escalate should they decide otherwise.
"They entered into a binding contract with Future Sound Asia to perform and the position of Future Sound Asia, among others, is that this contractual obligation was breached," the statement read. "Further, Mr. Healy's representative categorically provided a pre-show written assurance that Mr. Healy and The 1975's live performance 'shall adhere to all local guidelines and regulations' during their set in Malaysia. Unfortunately, the assurance was ignored."
