Indeed, Taylor Swift's success and talent need to be studied, which is why Belgium's Ghent University offered a new class.
Well, the course isn't all about Swift at it would also tackle also great poets and artists like Charlotte Bronte, Geoffrey Chaucer, and even William Shakespeare.
Taylor Swift Belgium Literature Course
Speaking to The Guardian, Elly McCausland was the academic who will be teaching the said course.
"I've never had so many emails from excited students asking if they can take the course," she said in an interview. "And actually non-students as well, people who are not part of the university and who want to participate in some way."
According to the academic, pitching the idea of a Taylor Swift course elective was a first in Europe. The idea came after she was "repeatedly struck by the parallels" of Swift and its similarities with English literature she had studied for a long time.
For instance, Swift's "Midnights" track "The Great War" echoed Sylvia Plath's joke about war and battle in the poem "Daddy." Meanwhile, the "folklore" track "mad woman" speaks about the patriarchy and mental health the same way Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote "The Yellow Wallpaper."
According to the publication, the course will start in the autumn of 2023, and will use Swift's work as the "springboard to explore everything from 14th-century writings to Margaret Atwood's take on The Tempest."
"What I want to do is show students that although these texts might seem inaccessible, they can be accessible if we look at them from a slightly different angle," she told the publication. "So, Shakespeare, in some way, is actually addressing a lot of the same questions as Taylor Swift is today, which seems crazy. But he is."
In 2022, New York University's Clive Davis Institute pioneered the first Swift class in the world and in the United States, which sparked more universities following suit.
