Lilly Allen has been working in the music industry since she was a teenager and even though most people assume that the life of celebrities are all glitz and glamour, the singer revealed that she had struggled with most of her adult life due to addiction.

Speaking with The New York Times, the 38-year-old songstress said that she had been a public figure since she was 18 years old and being a celebrity was a big part of her life.

Unfortunately, not everything went great since she rose to fame as she admitted that most of her adult life had been hazy until she became sober about four or five years ago. (via The Independent UK)

"I was literally just off my face the whole time... I was using fame as well - that was an addiction in itself: the attention and the paparazzi and the chaos," she added.

Lily Allen Sobriety Journey

Regarding how Lily Allen decided to change her lifestyle for good, she told "The Recovery" podcast with DJ Fat Tony that everything started during one of Miley Cyrus' shows in 2014.

At the time, the singer was an opening act for the "Hannah Montana" star.

Unfortunately, Allen admitted that she felt "worthless" during those moments and drugs and alcohol were the only things that made her feel the opposite. (via Insider)

The reason why she was sad at the time was that she and her former husband "sort of ran out of money" that's why she was forced to work as a singer on tour again, but since she gained a lot of weight, she "did not feel like a pop star at all."

She then became addicted to Adderall, a drug that helps with weight loss.

After realizing that drugs and alcohol weren't enough or working for her anymore, there was a point wherein she almost tried heroin.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Allen said she had been in the industry where she witnessed what happens to people who use heroin.

At the time, the thought of it popped into her head and she finally realized that she needed to "confront my demons."

Fortunately, Lily Allen found a ray of hope and decided to start her recovery journey. Although it wasn't easy at first as she lost "everything" including her marriage, her house, her career, and her friends, which made her fall back into her addiction again, she was able to pick herself up and change for good.
