An expert weighed in following Lana Del Rey's worrying concert where fans "fell like dominoes."
The incident happened at the singer's Foro Sol show in Mexico City on August 15. According to Fox News, over 65,000 attended the show, which was part of the singer's "Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd" tour.
A video that captured the fall of the fans has since gone viral, leading an expert to share his opinion on the terrifying experience.
Lana Del Rey's Concert Incident
Crowd analysis expert G. Keith Still watched the video several times, seeing the fans fall like a human domino effect. In an interview with The Messenger, he revealed that he knew what exactly happened on that day.
"It's called a progressive crowd collapse, where the momentum of one person knocking into another increases significantly," he told the outlet while speaking by phone. "I think the phrase 'domino effect' is quite appropriate."
The expert explained the incident by relating it to a domino knocking over another domino one-and-a-half times its size. In that case, a potential energy turns into kinetic energy, and the change in force leads to a fall.
Thus, when the same effect happened during Del Rey's concert, the crowd immediately knock the whole group as one.
As for the query whether a domino effect wave can be deadly, Still recalled two similar instances that led to the deaths of the attendees: the 2000 Roskilde Festival in Denmark that left nine dead and Seoul's Itaewon tragedy that killed 159.
According to Still, it only takes 30 seconds for a person to lose consciousness, and within six minutes, one can be brain-dead.
Del Rey's Mexico City tour wrapped up the first leg of her shows. She has since thanked her fans for supporting her before expressing her excitement to resume mid-September in Nashville.
