Carrie Bradshaw would disapprove of Selena Gomez's celebration of her single status. The pop sensation borrows some advice from one of Carrie's infamous ex-boyfriends from "Sex and the City" in the music video for her new song "Single Soon."
In a pivotal scene from the HBO series' sixth season, insecure novelist Berger (Ron Livingston) abruptly splits up with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) by leaving an imprecise sticky note that simply says, "I'm sorry. I can't. Don't hate me."
In the opening of her video, Gomez uses the same approach to break up with someone and uses exactly the same language as Berger. Should I speak to him on the phone? Should I put a little note in his coat pocket?
Before deciding on the small yellow death sentence, Gomez sings. Then, embracing romantic freedom, she goes out on the town with her girlfriends.
The Sex and the City characters were particularly upset by Berger's crude dumping technique, which they continually ridiculed and dissected in an episode aptly titled "The Post-it Always Sticks Twice."
Gomez previously used Sex and the City audio to tease the song on social media. She mimics picking up the phone and asks, "Hello?" The unknown caller responds, "It's over. I told my wife." Gomez/Samantha replies, "Who is this?"

On social media, Cattrall gave Gomez her approval for the callback, writing, "I approve this message." The exchange served as a win-win marketing opportunity for both Gomez and Cattrall: the singer got to preview her next single, while the actress got to recognize her most recognizable performance in advance of her eagerly anticipated appearance in the "And Just Like That" season 2 finale.
Additionally, Gomez is presently starring in Only Murders in the Building's third season. In addition to series regulars Martin Short and Steve Martin, the new season also stars Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd, who costarred with Gomez in Fundamentals of Caring. And Just Like That recently received a third season renewal. View the music video for "Single Soon" above.
