Olivia Rodrigo is set to release her highly-anticipated album, "Guts," on Sep. 8, 2023, following her smash debut album, "Sour."
Expectations on Rodrigo's upcoming release were quite high considering the acclaim that she received on the first one.
Although some netizens think that the sound for the two albums might be similar given the release of her first two lead singles, Rodrigo expressed her confidence in the songwriting aspect of her new album.
Is Olivia Rodrigo 'Vampire' About Taylor Swift?
Speaking to The Guardian, Olivia Rodrigo discussed how being taken out of context has impacted her.
Very recently, she finally addressed the allegations that her song "Vampire" was actually about Taylor Swift, a person many believe she has grown to be estranged from despite having a dear friendship back then. (via Style Caster)
"I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I've never done that before in my career and probably won't. I think it's better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing." she told the publication. "I was very surprised when people thought that."
Some netizens believe that "Vampire," her lead single for "Guts," was a jab to Taylor Swift demanding to be credited on her song "1 step forward, 3 steps back" after the seeming interpolation found on her 2017 song "New Year's Day." Rodrigo also credited Swift for the "Cruel Summer" interpolation of "deja vu," and Hayley Williams for "Misery Business" on "good 4 u." (via Variety)
Olivia Rodrigo Songwriting: 'Sour' vs 'Guts'
Elsewhere in the interview with The Guardian, Rodrigo also talked about how she is more confident on "Guts."
"I was so green as to how the music industry worked, the litigious side ... I feel like now I know so much more about the industry and I just feel ... better equipped in that regard. It wasn't something I thought about too much," she said.
Nowadays, artists have experienced much more legal scrutiny as the line between copyright and inspiration begins to fade.
Olivia Rodrigo is releasing her sophomore album, "Guts" on Sep. 8, 2023. With much anticipation, it is expected to top the Billboard 200 chart, much like its predecessor, "Sour," which broke several chart records for being one of the longest debut albums in the Top 10 of the genre-blending chart.
