Steve Harwell Left Smash Mouth Before His Death
Harwell left his more than two decades of career with Smash Mouth in 2021 following his controversial appearance at the Big Sip beer festival in Bethel, New York, where he made threatening remarks and a Nazi salute.
He issued a statement to a news outlet days after the festival regarding his retirement from the band, citing health issues as he was previously diagnosed with heart and neurological problems. Fans initially thought his blunder at the event caused him to leave the band.
"Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream," he said. "To my bandmates, it's been an honor performing with you all these years and I can't think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with."
