We'll definitely be seeing "Waitress: The Musical" in theatres soon!

After its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2023, the highly-awaited professional live shot of the Tony-nominated musical will finally be heading toward the big screen as the release date has finally been announced.

'Waitress: The Musical' Film Release Date

According to Deadline, independent film distribution company Bleecker Street has acquired the rights to show "Waitress: The Musical" film on theatres nationwide.

The "Waitress: The Musical" film release date would be on Dec. 7, 2023, in theatres nationwide. The film was captured onstage live in 2021 during its limited Broadway restaging at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre with the composer-lyricist Sara Bareilles, taking on her shift as Jenna Hunterson.

The "Waitress: The Musical" film was directed by Brett Sullivan, stage directed by Diane Paulus, and Jessie Nelson as its creative adviser - she also wrote the book for the musical.

Notably, "Waitress: The Musical" is a historic production on Broadway as it was the first musical production on Broadway to have four women in the top creative roles of the show. Nelson wrote the book of the musical, Bareilles composed and penned the lyrics, Lorin Latarro choreographed, and Paulus directed. Meanwhile, Tony winner Scott Pask led the design, Suttirat Ann Lalarb helmed the costumes, Ken Billington operated the lights, and Jonathan Deans managed the sound.

The said musical live shot stars Bareilles as Jenna, Charity Angel Dawson as Becky, Drew Gehling as Dr. Jim Pomatter, Caitlin Houlahan as Dawn Pinkett, Dakin Matthews as Joe, Christopher Fitzgerald as Ogie Anhorn, Joe Tippett as Earl Hunterson, Eric Anderson as Cal, and Anastacia McCleskey as Nurse Norma.

'Waitress: The Musical' Awards, Nominations

At the 2016 Tony Awards, "Waitress: The Musical" was nominated for four Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Jessie Mueller, and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for Christopher Fitzgerald.

However, the production failed to take home any awards, as "Hamilton" and "The Color Purple" beat them all in their nominated categories.

Despite this, the show has received heaps of praise from critics:

"The material is anchored at every step by Bareilles' melodious pop score and Mueller's supremely natural performance as Jenna. While the stock characters that surround her may be familiar, they're a winsome bunch played by sterling performers," The Hollywood Reporter said in a review.
