Olivia Rodrigo released her highly-anticipated sophomore album, "Guts," last weekend and it has been on repeat since then! Critics have released their reviews and it's overwhelmingly positive!
However, people on social media seemed to be egging Rodrigo and the critics for the rather sensational reviews on the album, despite being described by some as lackluster.
Olivia Rodrigo 'Guts' Critical Reception
"Guts" launched at Metacritic with an impressive grade of 91/100 score. Rolling Stone described the album as an "instant classic," giving it a five-star review.
More so, NME gave it a five-star review too, saying that Rodrigo unleashes her "fears and trauma with thrilling emotional candour."
The Independent gave it also a perfect score, noting that it was "even angrier, wittier and rockier" than her "excellent" debut album, "Sour."
"GUTS sees Rodrigo smash her way out of the confines of small screen life and arrive kicking and screaming into her real life. No more red lights or stop signs in her way," the review said.
Very recently, Pitchfork also graded "Guts" with a stunning 8.0 review, which seemed to trigger some people online.
Some even said that the publication was a joke for giving the album an 8.0 grade, scoring higher than Taylor Swift's "evermore" and tying with "folklore."
A user even said that the "Guts" was the "most childish album of 2023."
However, some fans defended Olivia, saying: "i hope the absolute worst for everyone that speaks badly on olivia rodrigo like im sorry i just have no more sympathy for losers who take time out of their day to hate on my ate olivia so."
Comparisons around Rodrigo mimicking Hayley Williams and Avril Lavigne has also spurred backlash on social media.
"Oh no Olivia Rodrigo makes almost-punk music for current teens... which is exactly what Avril Lavigne was doing when we were teens," one said.
Olivia Rodrigo 'Guts' Billboard 200
Meanwhile, Hits Daily Double has predicted that Olivia Rodrigo's "Guts" is launching atop the Billboard 200 chart with 285,000 album units.
"Vampire" is in a close fight with Doja Cat's "Paint The Town Red" at No. 1 as "bad idea, right" returns to the Top 10. All the remaining songs are expected to debut within the Top 30 frame.
