Michael Jackson's son spoke candidly about the late King of Pop's struggles because of his chronic autoimmune disorder.
The "Smooth Criminal" singer left everyone confused when his complexion started to change in the years leading to his death. Reports soon confirmed that he was suffering from a condition called vitiligo, which causes small light patches to develop on a person's skin.
Michael Jackson's "Insecurity" Revealed
His eldest son appeared in a new interview in which he spoke about how the skin condition affected the singer's confidence.
Speaking on the "Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson" podcast, Prince Jackson opened up about the "Beat It" singer's experience with vitiligo and how it made him insecure.
"When I was younger, he was always explaining to me, speaking about that," he said. "I think it was even in the autopsy report. I think the cause of it is up for speculation, but it's either vitiligo or some form of lupus contributed to the vitiligo."
The 26-year-old added that the condition eventually triggered Michael's anxiety as it made him look blotchy. As a result, he tried to find ways to smooth out his appearance.
Prince's statement mirrored what his late father told Oprah Winfrey in his 1993 interview, where he addressed the speculations that he underwent extensive cosmetic surgery and changed the color of his skin.
At that time, the "The Way You Make Me Feel" crooner - who died in 2009 - confirmed that he had a skin disorder that "he could not help." He also denied bleaching his skin and clarified he just tried to control it because of the blotches that the condition developed.
Secret Behind Michael Jackson's White Glove
Michael's struggles with vitiligo seemingly started around 1983 when he began wearing his iconic glove. Actress Cicely Tyson revealed that she once visited a fashion designer who made the glove for Michael, explaining that the singer would use it to conceal the signs of vitiligo in his body.
"Michael was beginning to develop the vitiligo. And it started on his hand ... The glove was to camouflage it. That's how that glove came into being," she said. "I was there when he was creating it."
Meanwhile, the crooner's personal doctor, dermatologist Arnold Klein, praised him in his interview with The Washington Post for being one of the first famous people who bravely opened up about the condition.
