The other half of 2023 is definitely not Lizzo's year as she continues to face backlash and scrutiny because of the damning allegations targeting her work behavior, ethics, morals, and principles.
Three of Lizzo's former dancers alleged that she promoted a toxic working environment, along with allegations of sexual and religious harassment, along with being a weight shamer.
Now, a new complainant has come forward and corroborated the initial accusations, which came at the same time when she received the Black Music Action Coalition's Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award.
Lizzo Receives BMAC Humanitarian Award Amid New Lawsuit
Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Lizzo is set to receive the Black Music Action Coalition's Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award.
"The Black Music Action Coalition is proud to honor Lizzo and Sylvia Rhone at this year's gala as they join a group of trailblazers who have made immense impact within the music industry and beyond," BMAC co-founder Willie "Prophet" Stiggers said in a statement "We applaud their dedication to pushing boundaries, amplifying Black voices and crashing through those glass ceilings creating space for Black women."
Formed in 2020, the Black Music Action Coalition worked to "systemic racism within the music business and advocate on behalf of Black artists, songwriters, producers, managers, agents, executives, lawyers, and other industry professionals." (via Billboard)
Lizzo's Black Music Action Coalition Speech
Ironically, Lizzo was slapped with two damning lawsuits alleging that she and her team had promoted a racist environment, among others during the "Special" tour that took place earlier this year.
Lizzo was absent during the red carpet event of the Gala, but she was present to accept the award, along with some of her dancers.
"I really needed this right now. God's timing is on time.I didn't write a speech because I don't know what to say in times like these," she said in her speech, thanking the coalition and expounding on her idea of humanitarianism.
Elsewhere in her emotional speech, Lizzo pointed out that it is "easy to do the right thing when everybody's watching you.
"And I'm going to continue to be who I am, no matter who's watching. I'm going to continue to shine a light on the people who are helping people because they deserve it," she promised.
Since being slapped with the controversial lawsuit, Lizzo has denied both allegations of condoning such working environments.
