Times Union reports that '70s pop singer and The Partridge Family star David Cassidy plead guilty to a DWI charge in upstate New York yesterday, Sept. 3. This plea deal stems from an incident near Albany last summer, in which the 64-year-old singer was pulled over for reportedly failing to dim his headlights to oncoming traffic, and was discovered to be driving while intoxicated. Cassidy was visiting New York for the Saratoga Race Course meet.
Cassidy's plea deal reduces his DWI charge to a misdemeanor, requiring him to perform 50 hours of community service in his home state of Florida. Sentencing will take place on Nov. 5.
"I'm not pleased how this turned out tonight," Cassidy said outside of the courthouse in Schodack, New York, "but at least I'm not going to prison."
Cassidy reportedly continued to protest the judgment, asking, "Is this an election year? I don't mean any disrespect. I love this part of New York and have been coming here for years to the track. I admit I was driving drunk, but this was my first offense in New York state; I didn't hurt anyone or crash my car."
Note how Cassidy specifies that this was his first offense in New York; USA Today reports that the singer was sentenced to three months in rehab by a judge in Los Angeles back in March for a separate drunk-driving incident, which took place in January. Cassidy claims that the rehab has been effective, and that he has stopped drinking.
