Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May expressed his disapproval of the procedure employed to discover which of his band's songs could be used to release insulin for those with diabetes.
An ongoing study aims to find alternative ways for individuals who suffer from the condition to maintain their insulin levels rather than simply through injections.
In a recent breakthrough, researchers in Switzerland have discovered that playing Queen's iconic song "We Will Rock You" can help cells synthesize and deliver beneficial hormones.
This innovative technique requires the insertion of a capsule into the body containing designer cells that secrete insulin.
Using sound waves, a controlled membrane channel was opened, allowing insulin to escape the cell. This process is regulated when the hormone is released from the capsules.
The research team's findings were quite astonishing - that "We Will Rock You" had soundwaves which, when tested on mice with a speaker placed directly on them, opened up channels for insulin release. Remarkably, this effect was not observed without direct contact.
Brian May, the renowned figure behind the songwriting of Queen, recently shared an article from Forbesdetailing a remarkable discovery; however, he was vocal in his condemnation of animal testing as a means of research.
He mentioned how it is surprising to find out that a song such as "We Will Rock You" can benefit one's health.
While they were happy about this discovery, unfortunately, it had resulted from cruel experiments conducted on mice.
Brian further said in a lengthy Instagram caption, "It's now well known that many drugs and procedures that work in mice or rats do NOT work in humans. 'Proving' drugs in non-human animals was the cause of the tragedy with Thalidomide some years ago."
"And, ethically, causing pain to one species to cure the ills of another is unjustifiable. So the laws requiring tests on animals MUST be changed."
Shaking his head in disbelief, the words of shock spilled out further.
He said how he cannot stand the appalling way that animals are treated.
"We have to take a stand and put an end to this heinousness. Scientists must be held accountable for their actions and be responsible for what they do. This news is not something I will be rejoicing in tonight, that's for sure. Bri."
