The snail seemingly resembles the popular cocktail because of its bright yellow color. The outlet noted that it's a type of mollusk that sticks to hard surfaces under the sea.
Rüdiger Bieler, a biologist, was the first person to record and see the snail while he was scuba diving. He noted in his study that the color of the snail reminded him of a margarita.
"In some ways, our team was no stranger to the regional signature drink. And of course, Jimmy Buffett's music," the biologist said.
He added that when they were figuring out what to name the sea snail, they wanted it to be connected with the cocktail and the fact that "it lives in the Florida Keys."
