The current talk of the town are the lists of artists and music that have been submitted and are eligible for the 2024 Grammy Awards-most especially the Best New Artist category, which happens to be a point of contention among netizens especially in regards to Sabrina Carpenter.
According to reports, there are only eight nomination slots that will be granted to an artist or act, and the stakes are high, with 397 eligible artists and acts named and vying for a Grammy nod.
Those artists come from different parts of the world, with different music genres; some of the most notable are Gracie Abrams, Ice Spice, Peso Plume, Lainey Wilson, Madison Beer, Pink Pantheress, and even KPOP groups like SEVENTEEN, Aespa, Stray Kids, and more.
Following the news that Carpenter has been submitted for the Best New Artist category at the 2024 Grammys Awards, netizens' eyebrows were raised and they scoffed at the idea.
Sabrina Carpenter Eyes Grammy Nominations
Several news accounts on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared the update, noting that not only is the "Nonsense" singer vying for a nomination for Best New Artist, but she also submitted her chart-topping single "Nonsense" for Best Pop Solo Performance.
The post was met with backlash and criticisms towards the singer. Many noted that Carpenter is not a "new artist," and she debuted in 2015 with "Eyes Wide Open."
"Ain't she debut eight years ago..." One wrote.
"Her a*s been a best new artist for five years... it's giving Latto," another added.
On the other hand, other netizens also took to X to explain what "new artist" refers to.
"Firm believer that the 'best new artist' category should be changed to 'best breakthrough artist,'" one wrote.
"For the last time.. 'best new artist' does not mean an artist who recently debuted. It means an artist who had a major career breakthrough. Sabrina definitely did."
Sabrina Carpenter's Major Breakthrough
As per the Recording Academy, the Best New Artist category is only given to an artist or act once, however, they do not specify whether "new artist" refers to an artist being completely new to the music industry.
Other stars who have received the prestigious award include Samra Joy, Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Alessia Cara, Chance the Rapper, Sam Smith, Bon Iver, Amy Winehouse, and more.
