Dave Grohl is regarded as one of the greatest drummers and musicians of all time, but he waited for the right time before savoring success.
The Foo Fighters' founder played with other bands before establishing the group, which was supposedly a one-man band. He performed with Scream before Nirvana's debut in 1990.
For a few months after Nirvana's formation, Grohl and Kurt Cobain experienced something that made the former appreciate their success more.
Dave Grohl Revealed Where He and Kurt Cobain Lived
Speaking on the Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast (via Loudwire), Grohl looked back at the time he joined Nirvana after Scream's breakup. He played the drums for the band for the first time in the project "Nevermind" in 1991.
According to the 54-year-old musician, he lived in a small "squalor" apartment with Cobain that was filled with garbage and cigarette butts.
"It was f------ disgusting. I would have done anything to have my own apartment and to be able to do that through making music," he continued.
But as soon as they released the 1991 record, their lives immediately changed.
Grohl said they seemingly lived in a different world by 1992 or 1993 because of the skyrocketing success of "Nevermind." Still, he clarified that the change was not that dramatic as they did not become millionaires overnight.
He revealed that they started earning enough money to buy himself two packs of cigarettes a day and live in a motel.
Nirvana ended their career after Cobain's death. The musician was found dead on April 5, 1994, following a suicide months after he fell into a coma and suffered a near-death experience due to an accidental heroin overdose.
According to the Seattle Police Department, Cobain died from a gunshot wound.
Dave Grohl Reunited With Nirvana's Surviving Member
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nirvana's final album, "In Utero," Grohl reunited with Krist Novoselic and the album's producer Steve Albini in the same Conan O'Brien interview.
Their appearance occurred days before the hotly anticipated release of the "In Utero" deluxe edition, which features 53 unreleased tracks.
the Conan O'Brien "Needs a Friend" feed dropped the full interview on October 23, while it is scheduled to unveil the extended version on Monday on SiriusXM's Lithium (channel 34).
