Katy Perry Bio
Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (known professionally as Katy Perry) was born on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. Growing up in southern California, young Katy is the middle child of two Christian minister parents. Non-religious music was not allowed to be played and performed in the Hudson family household, as Katy was raised singing church hymns and gospel songs.
As a teen, Katy learned how to play the guitar, and decided to go after a music career in Nashville under a Christian record company, as per Britannica.
How Katy Perry Started Her Music Career
Katy's self-titled debut album released under the Christian record label in Nashville had a disappointing number of sales. Not too long afterwards, Katy ventured into the mainstream pop-rock music genre, and moved to Los Angeles to work on starting a career in a different music path. Katy used her mother's maiden name, Perry, as a part of her professional name starting at that time, to avoid her being mistaken for actress, Kate Hudson.

Katy's breakthrough success came when Capitol records released her 2007 EP, "Ur so Gay." The lead single off this album, "I Kissed a Girl" was a number one hit in many countries.
