Every once in awhile a story appears that reminds us all that some of the people in corporate America do have hearts and a moral compass. Last Saturday, defensive tackle Devon Still learned that he had been cut from the Cincinnati Bengals' roster but rather than being chopped and screwed the team brought him onto its practice squad. This means that Still will continue to rake in a salary and perhaps more importantly, he will retain the medical insurance needed for his daughter's stage 4 pediatric cancer.
Still actually is viewing this move as the biggest blessing imaginable. Four year-old Leah Still was diagnosed with cancer back in June and obviously it has thrown her entire family into a devastating tail spin. Still admits that there is no way that football could garner 100% of his focus right now and he is overwhelmed by the support from friends and also the Bengal's organization. They could easily have cut him from the team and fired him completely. Instead by bumping him to the practice squad Still can still support his family, care for his sick child and give football whatever he has left for now.
So often we hear of athletic teams claiming to be like family but then the things that go on behind the scenes seem to totally contradict that notion. In this instance it seems that the Cincinnati Bengals really did evaluate Still's home situation and found a way to really support him rather than just thinking of what their NFL team needed. We really don't see these acts of kindness and proof of a moral compass often enough, do we? Are you surprised by the gracious offer that the Bengals extended to Devon Still?
