This week's Saturday Night Live was exceptionally musical, with host Timothée Chalamet performing a segment of his opening monologue as Willy Wonka to commemorate the end of the 118-day actors' strike.

He also revived his controversial SoundCloud rapper persona, Smoke Chedda Tha A$ Getta, for a "Rap Roundtable" sketch that celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip hop.

The night's musical guest, the excellent indie rock supergroup Boygenius, was another example of real music.

First up on the SNL stage were Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus. They looked like The Beatles and paid homage to Nirvana with their matching jackets and ties.

Their song, "Not Strong Enough," went viral.

Over a symphony of guitars, they sung in unison, "The way I am, not strong enough to be your man/I try, I can't stop staring at the ceiling fan and/Spinning out about things that haven't happened/Breathing in and out."

Later, the band made a comeback wearing matching black suits and rocked the crowd with a powerful rendition of their song "Satanist," backed by a number of backup musicians.

It was easy to win over the audience with its tonal and trademark variations. The audience erupted in applause as Baker threw her guitar across the stage at the conclusion of the song.

The group learnt out on Friday (10 November) that they had been nominated for a remarkable six prizes at the 2024 Grammy Awards, including album and record of the year for the record and "Not Strong Enough," respectively.

Thanks to her collaboration with SZA on "Ghost in the Machine," Bridgers has been nominated for a Grammy for the seventh time, tying Victoria Monét and engineer Serban Ghenea for second place. Only SZA has more nominations, with nine.

The members of boygenius discussed their initial emotions to the news in advance of their November 11th engagement on Saturday Night Live. "I don't know how to respond to it," Julien said, per Variety. "It's just happened. I'm overwhelmed."

To paraphrase her later words, she was "stoked" to be nominated. Phoebe added, "It's triple the joy, right? Yeah, much easier to feel happy for them. Much easier to feel, kind of."

Phoebe, who has been nominated for four Grammys in 2021, said she has appreciated the experience more this time around.

"It was f-ing COVID when I was nominated, and this is so much more celebratory. I was pretty traumatized last time, and the only way I felt it was on the phone. So it's already way more fun, to find out in a room full of people and be celebrating."
