Young women are sticking up together in the music industry and Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo's friendship is a prime example of that.
Eilish and Rodrigo are one of the youngest pop stars in the world right now. With their level of fame, some might say that they are susceptible to being taken advantage of, and that's what Eilish had in mind when she wrote her song "Goldwing."
Billie Eilish Explains Being 'Protective' Over Olivia Rodrigo
Speaking to The Los Angeles Times, Billie Eilish talked about the sense of "protectiveness" she feels for Olivia Rodrigo.
"I think everybody's experiences are so individual ... Nobody has had anybody else's life, you know? But I do feel a protectiveness over Olivia," she confessed, noting that she was the was the first artist younger than her who had experienced the same level of fame and trajectory in the music industry, after her.
"Olivia was getting big, and she was just, like, this little dainty child," the "Happier Than Ever" hitmaker went on to say. "I felt so nervous. I was worried about her. She came up in that acting world, and people are so weird. I don't know - I just felt very protective over her."
Rodrigo took the world by storm when she came out with "Driver's License," the lead single for her Grammy-winning album, "Sour." The track even won Best Pop Vocal Performance at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Like Eilish, Rodrigo also won Best New Artist in her own year.
Billie Eilish 'Goldwing' Lyrics Meaning
Elaborating more about her feelings on Olivia Rodrigo to The Los Angeles Times, Eilish also noted that she was thinking of the singer when she was writing one of her songs from her latest album, "Happier Than Ever."
"I have a song called 'Goldwing' from my last album that's kind of about her. I've never said that to anyone," she told the publication.
Specifically, Eilish was talking about this verse:
"They're gonna tell you what you wanna hear / Then they're gonna disappear / Gonna claim you like a souvenir / Just to sell you in a year," she sings before repeating, "Better keep your head down."
However, she clarified that the song wasn't actually about Rodrigo, but the place she was in previously - a similar experience she had during that time too.
"It's not only about her. I was just thinking about her when I was writing it. She was coming up, and she was younger than me, and nobody had ever been younger than me," Eilish added.
