Cliff Richard did not impress the public when he shared a memory he had with Elvis Presley.
The controversy started when Richard appeared on "This Morning" to promote the release of his new books. The hosts asked him whether he ever met Presley when he was still alive since they launched their careers at the same time.
Instead of touching people's hearts with his story, he found himself in the middle of hot water due to his "insensitive" comment.
Cliff Richard Recalls Memory With Elvis Presley
According to Richard (via Mirror), he was asked to pose for a photo with Presley. Despite having the chance, he reportedly refused it because the "Can't Help Falling in Love" hitmaker was "too fat."
"I had one chance through a journalist while I was promoting Devil Woman in the States," he said, adding, he waited for the moment to see the King and have a photo with him.
However, he decided to put it off after the interview.
"Because I knew he had put on a lot of weight and I thought, 'If I am having a photograph taken with him and it's going to be hanging on my refrigerator, he's got to look good,'" he shared. "And I put it off and, of course, then he died."
Richard put more fuel to the fire when he repeated the statement as he gave advice to everyone, reminding them to get the chance to meet who they want to meet even if "they've put on weight."
Following his interview, Presley's fans expressed their disappointment and rage on X over what Richard stated.
One said, ""Sir" Cliff Richard there. Didnt want to have his picture taken with Elvis Presley because Elvis was "fat". Looking forward to the truth coming out on this c--- when he croaks it. You better believe it will."
"I'd take fat Elvis Presley over absolutely any version of Cliff Richard," another wrote, while a third person said, "Gobsmacked at walking corpse Cliff Richard fat shaming the late Elvis Presley on live TV and inadvertently implying Alison Hammond doesn't look good and is ugly!"
A few days after the issue, he targeted Adele by saying that he likes Aretha Franklin's version of "Rolling In The Deep."
