Dolly Parton shocked audiences at the Dallas Cowboys halftime show and netizens when she stepped out to perform in a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader uniform during the Thanksgiving game.
According to People Magazine, the country slash rock superstar wore the signature cropped blue top with the white vest with the shorts adorned with rhinestones and star-shaped patches; she performed "Jolene," "9 to 5," and "We Are the Champions/We Will Rock You."
The entire thing caused an uproar among netizens, who felt scandalized at the sight of the singer in such a revealing outfit.
"77-year-old woman shouldn't be on stage pretending they're 20... We need to stop normalizing this behavior," an X (formerly known as Twitter) user wrote.
Dolly Parton's Manager Reveals What Really Happened
According to reports, Danny Nozell, the singer's manager, was not even aware that Parton would be performing in the Dallas Cowboys cheerleader uniform.
"It was completely her idea," he said. "She waited until right before she went to stage and came out of the dressing room to show us all. When she came out, myself, the security and my staff fainted.
"I couldn't tell the difference between Dolly and the cheerleaders. That is the genius of Dolly, and people are still talking about it."
Dolly Parton Faces 'Ageist' Backlash
As per reports, there were mixed reactions from netizens following Parton's Dallas Cowboys performance, some absolutely despised it while others celebrated alongside the singer.
The topic of ageism was brought up several times during the discussion and debate regarding the 77-year-old singer's outfit of choice.
The World Health Organization, or WHO, explained that ageism refers to the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age."
Parton's sister, Stella, shared her thoughts on the matter; "I personally thought my big sister Dolly was cute as hell in her Dallas Cowboys cheerleading costume. To those of you being so critical of a 77-year-old kicking up her heels, I say f**k yourself. Shame on you not her."
Parton herself has not shared her insights regarding the backlash her outfit has caused, and it seems like she does not care either; after all, she is Dolly Parton, and she can do whatever she wants to.
