For the first time since Riley Gale, the band's frontman, passed away in August 2020, the remaining members of the Dallas thrash band Power Trip pulled off an unexpected reunion on Friday.
On Friday night at Austin's Mohawk, Fugitive, featuring guitarist Blake Ibanez of Power Trip, was the main attraction; yet, the performance flier mentioned a "special guest."
That turned out to be Ibanez, guitarist Nick Stewart, bassist Chris Whetzel, and drummer Chris Ulsh, the remaining members of Power Trip, who performed a five-song set together on stage.
In order to replace the vacuum created by Gale's death from an accidental overdose from the poisonous effects of fentanyl, the musicians brought in Fugitive vocalist Seth Gilmore.
The band performed five songs in all, including "Soul Sacrifice," "Executioner's Tax," "Hornet's Nest," "Manifest Decimation," and "Crucifixation."

Power Trip took a break after Gale passed away and focused on other endeavors, but the remaining members would not rule out a reunion in the future.
Shortly after the group was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for their live performance of "Executioner's Tax (Swing of the Axe)," Ibanez told the Los Angeles Times in March 2021, "We do want to continue playing music together; we just are not sure what that looks like at this time."
The leader of Texas thrash metal group Power Trip, Riley Gale, passed away in August of last year at the age of 34.
According to Rolling Stone, fentanyl's deadly consequences are what caused Gale's death. The cause of death was verified to RS by the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office, which also reported that the manner of death was determined to be accidental.
Gale's bandmates released a statement on August 25 confirming his passing. (The previous evening, Gale died.) They wrote, "Riley was a friend, a brother, and a son." Riley was a modest, generous buddy in addition to being an enormously successful rock musician.
He had a great heart and his songs impacted a great number of lives. Many musicians, including Fucked Up, Touché Amoré, Code Orange, Anthrax, Uniform, Coheed and Cambria, Geoff Rickley, and others, paid tribute to the frontman after learning of his passing.
