Thanks to her now timeless hits "New Rules," "Dance The Night," and "Don't Start Now," Dua Lipa has established herself in pop stardom. The Albanian-British singer has redefined disco pop into something new, weaving nostalgia into futuristic house beats that is suitable for the new generation.
As she releases new music, Dua Lipa has been constantly criticized for her songs all sounding the same. Most notably, her Grammy-nominated song "Dance The Night," was described by many to be a reject from her last album, "Future Nostalgia."
Dua Lipa Wants 'Longevity' Over Instant Hits
Speaking to The Los Angeles Times, Dua Lipa discussed the arrival of her new sound, which was signaled by her newest release, "Houdini."
While she believes that the new song sounded sonically different from her previous works, Lipa said that her music has grown over time.
"My songs tend to have very slow but stable growth over time," the Grammy-winning singer explained to the publication.
"There's always something that's a little weird about them that [makes you] want to listen to them more. They grow slowly, but they stick around. And that's all I want: I think longevity is more important than the instant-hit thing."
Dua Lipa's "Dance The Night" has peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and ranked No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Charts for 2023.
At the 2024 Grammy Awards, the "Barbie the Album" single went on to reap two nominations including Best Song Written for Visual Media and Song of the Year.
Talking more about her discography, Dua Lipa had this to say.
"I've realised that the things that I like aren't obvious as pop songs," she elaborated. "They're pop songs, for sure, but the way that the melodies are - or the way that I like the arrangement to be - it's just not regular in a pop song. It takes people a second to get it."
